The Vegan Difference

At The Living Root Café (LRC), we recognize that finding a single restaurant that serves healthy and tasty food can be challenging—let’s face it, we are drowning in a sea of unhealthy choices. This is why we are committed to providing you with the most nutrient-dense vegan options in town. Our commitment includes building relationships with local farmers who are passionate about sustainable agricultural practices. Together, we believe that offering clean, plant-based options not only benefits your health but also helps the local economy and supports the global effort to reduce the harmful impact of animal agriculture on our fragile planet.

On a culinary level

We know that creating healthy, flavorful vegan dishes requires us to think outside the fast-food box and make things from scratch while honoring old-world traditions of food preparation. So, we follow a simple rule of thumb—make it real, make it fresh! This means carefully sourcing local ingredients whenever possible, creating recipes using real spices instead of harmful or artificial flavorings, and cooking with convection ovens that replicate the even heat distribution technique of ancient clay and stone ovens.

Integrity is our Policy

To accomplish our goal of creating premium, high-quality products, we continually seek farms that grow their crops organically. We prefer food from known local sources, always buy non-GMO, and favor whole over processed ingredients. When sourcing from a distributor, we NEVER compromise on items from the EWG’s “Dirty Dozen” list. We strive to make our vegan food exciting and exceptional, using lots of herbs and spices and exclusively Himalayan pink salt.

The Vegan Movement

The current vegan movement traces its roots back to 1944 when Donald Watson founded the Vegan Society in England, advocating for a lifestyle free from all animal products. Eighty years later, the leading voices in the vegan movement include prominent activists like Dr. Michael Greger, author of “How Not to Die;” Dr. Neal Barnard, founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), Rich Roll, ultra-endurance athlete and author; and Vegan Outreach, a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading the vegan message through outreach and education programs: https://veganoutreach.org/. The Living Root Café is proud to participate in the global movement towards veganism, a healthy lifestyle and sustainable living.
